Shiyi Liu
Shiyi Liu is a painter whose practice develops from a lifelong relationship with Yanwu Peak, Phoenix Mountain in Chaozhou, southern China. Born into a family that has worked this terrain for generations, Liu returns to the mountain annually, translating a knowledge of place forged through direct observation, memory, and seasonal labour.
His work navigates the tension between what is observed and what is inherently known. As memory permeates the visual field, elements within his landscapes shift, disappear, or assume new physical weight. Working meticulously with a restricted palette, Liu distils familiar topography into elemental light, space, and form.
Through painting, he explores how a known environment can become unfamiliar, and how the repeated act of seeing allows the unseen to surface.
